Christ Lutheran presents “Don Juan in Hell”

Hell is coming to Christ Church, at least a theatrical production about heaven and hell, in November. This year’s show is George devilBernard Shaw’s 1903 comedy, Don Juan in Hell, which Richard Walsh has abridged from his rather lengthy play Man and Superman.

In the production, four residents of hell in witty and sometimes wise ways debate the meaning of heaven and hell, each from her or his perspective. The human foibles of each character are amply in evidence, and although their perspectives are by and large secular, we can learn a lot from them about our own views on the meaning of life and an after-life. The characters in Don Juan in Hell are Don Juan, played by Ken Noakes; Dona Ana, played by Nadine Quehl; The Commander, played by Holt Sivak; and Satan, played by Richard Walsh.

If you attended the 2012 production of Antigone, you will recognize Ken and Holt from that show. Or, if you attended last year’s production of The Merry Wives of Windsor you will recall Ken. Of course, Nadine is a familiar member of the congregation who played in both of the previous shows. As for Richard, you might recall his enacting “Isaiah” this past spring or other dramatic roles played as part of worship.

As before, Paul Bosch is designing the production; and, as she did last year, Sheryl Loeffler will provide piano accompaniment. Hilary Walsh is the stage manager, and Conrad Knabenschuh will again  run the lights and sound and record the performance.

By the way, this show is suitable for Grade 7’s and up, although probably students in Grades 11 and 12 will understand it better. The show is not suitable for younger children. Agnostics and atheists are welcome too!

Three performances: Fri Nov 21st and Sat Nov 22nd at 8pm, Sun Nov 23rd at 2:30pm. Call the church at (519) 885-4050 to reserve tickets. Seating is limited to 120 per performance. Tickets are $15; $10 for seniors and students. All proceeds from the performances will support the congregation’s programs and community outreach.
